How often do you really need to change your heating and air conditioning air filter?
The answer to this question depends on how much work you’re putting your HVAC system through. If you don’t have pets or allergies, we recommend every six months. If you have a larger home with pets and children with allergies, it will need to be changed more frequently. It doesn’t hurt to do a monthly check of your filters and judge it that way. If it is dirty, change it! Your air filters are working throughout the home to prevent any pet dander, dust, or pollen from circulating into the air you breathe. If the air filter goes longer than the suggested amount of time without being changed, you pay the price in more ways than one.

The efficiency of a filter is rated by its MERV (Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value) number, which typically ranges from 1-8 for residential air filters. The higher the number, the more efficient the air filter is at capturing particles. Plus, purchasing a high-quality air filter has the potential to save you money over the long-term. Inexpensive air filters require more frequent replacement than high-quality options.
How do I clean the air vents?
If after replacing your filter you notice that the screen is just as dirty as the old filter – here are some tips from Home Advsior to give it a quick deep clean.
- Turn off the AC unit
- Use the hose on your vacuum cleaner to rid the vent of dust
- Remove vent and wipe with a wet rag
- To get in-between the vents, use a knife wrapped in a rag.
