The 2023-2024 winter season was ranked the warmest winter on record for the United States, with eight states observing their warmest winter on record. According to the National Centers for Environmental Information, February 2024 was the nation’s third warmest February on record. Adjust Your Thermostat
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency recommends that while you are at home, your air conditioner be set to 78 degrees in the summer to get the maximum utility bill savings. That may not work for your household or be a comfortable temperature. A general rule of thumb is that for each degree you set your thermostat above 72 degrees, you can save up to 3% on your energy bill.
HVAC.com recommends increasing the indoor temperature by 5 to 7 degrees when you’re away from home. This can support your energy-efficiency goals and lower your monthly energy costs. However, in Texas, we have to consider humidity levels as well.
Program Your Thermostat
When considering what temperature to set your thermostat to maximize your HVAC energy efficiency, a programmable or smart thermostat will make adjusting your temperature and setting a schedule much easier.
Use Fans
A ceiling fan won’t actually lower the temperature of your home, but it can create a wind-chill effect that makes you feel cooler by speeding up the evaporation process on your skin. This means you can increase the temperature on your thermostat and still feel comfortable while saving on energy costs.
Close Curtains or Invest in Energy Efficient Window Treatments
Adding window treatments to your home can provide an extra layer of insulation. In the summer, using energy-efficient window treatments can help to keep your room cool by preventing cold air from escaping. During hot summer days, closing the window treatments can help prevent the sun from heating your home, reducing how hard your AC needs to work.
