In many areas of the country, an air conditioner is a luxury only needed a few times a year. Texas is not one of those areas. Here in central Texas, your A/C unit is the difference between a cool and comfortable home and living in an oven. If you’re stuck with a broken air conditioner, you’re in for a miserable time.
Air conditioners are a major investment, and just like other major investments (your car or home), it needs upkeep! We recommend having your system serviced bi-annually, or twice a year, to both prolong the life of your air conditioner and ensure that your system is working both effectively and efficiently. That being said, even with all the proper maintenance, your system still may malfunction or break down. Once you’re stuck with a broken air conditioner and the temperature is rising, this is what to do:
The first thing you need to do when your air conditioner isn’t working correctly is to call the professionals. We do our absolute best to get to you as soon as possible (including on weekends and holidays) but sometimes it takes us a little bit to get out to your home. Call us first and then follow the next tips (and don’t worry, we’ll remind you of your next steps once we’re on the phone with you!)
Anything you notice that’s out of the ordinary will help us to diagnose the problem. Did you smell anything coming from your vents? Did you hear anything before your system stopped working? Do you hear anything now that it’s malfunctioning? Go outside and look at the outdoor portion of your HVAC system – does anything look amiss? Take notes of anything that seems peculiar before moving onto the next step.
Once you have taken the time to look for anything that may indicate what’s causing your A/C trouble, it’s time to turn your system off. Running your system for an extended period of time while it’s functioning improperly can cause additional damage. When it comes to a broken air conditioner, it’s always better to err on the side of caution – shut that system off!
In this instance, think of your home like a refrigerator. The more you leave the door (and windows) open, the quicker your home’s temperature will rise. If it’s a cooler evening, you can leave the windows open to get some ventilation going, but otherwise, it’s time to close up shop! Refrain from using appliances that will introduce additional heat to your home like the stove or oven. If your home is unbearably hot already, it’s a good idea to go to a friend’s or even to a public place with A/C like a mall to keep cool until we can get to you!
When we get to your home, let us know what you’ve noticed in as much detail as possible. The more information you can provide, the better! Once we get the info from you and start our work, you’re well on your way back to a cool and comfortable home.
We pride ourselves on bringing total home comfort wherever we go and your residence is no exception! We won’t rest until your home is back to being an oasis from the brutal Texas heat. If you’re having trouble with your system or if you’re dealing with a broken air conditioner – don’t hesitate to give us a call! We’d love to help you out.
