3 Scary Sounds to Listen For This Halloween | Broken HVAC Help

Halloween is right around the corner, and spooky season is fully upon us! With the droves of scary costumes and creepy decorations that will surely fill your neighborhood, there’s one thing that is truly terrifying – your HVAC system going out right as we head into the colder temperatures of Fall and Winter. If you’re hearing strange noises coming from your system, it’s time to call for about your broken HVAC – these are the noises to be listening for:

Hissing

If you’re hearing a hissing noise coming from any part of your system, you have a serious problem on your hands! Generally, hissing sounds indicate that sir is escaping your system somewhere – definitely not something you want if you’re worried about efficiency. If your system is running less efficiently, your home isn’t staying as warm (or cool) as it should be and your utility bills will be higher than necessary – a truly scary thought! If you hear a hissing noise coming from your walls, vents, or either the indoor or outdoor portion of your system, it’s time to call in the pros!

Clanking or Banging

Your system should normally be pretty much silent. A low humming or a quick sound of it turning on are both normal sounds to hear if your HVAC system is working correctly. However, if you hear a clanking sound or even a banging noise, then you need to call a technician ASAP. Both of these noises generally indicate that components of your system that usually don’t come in contact with one another, are. This is a major broken HVAC red flag – when parts of your system are no longer in alignment and are striking one another, your system is very likely to sustain long-term damage. If you hear clanking or banging noises coming from your system, call us ASAP (and then turn your system off!) The quicker we can make the repair, the better off your HVAC system will be.

Rattling

Rattling is one of the most common abnormal noises we hear from malfunctioning HVAC systems. It can mean a few things, some relatively innocuous and some more serious, so it’s important to bring in a professional to diagnose the source of the sound.

Rattling sounds can be caused by something small, like a twig (or some other form of small debris) falling into your system and bouncing around. If you hear the rattling coming from your vents or the indoor portion of your HVAC system, turn off your system and call an HVAC tech. The risk of letting your system run while making strange sounds is absolutely NOT worth risking a broken HVAC system!
