New Year, New Goals | Getting Enough Sleep

It’s a new year, and along with that comes new members to your gym and many resolutions. One thing that should be on your list of resolutions is getting enough sleep. You’ll never be on top of your game if you only slept 3 hours the night before! You might be wondering why an HVAC company is talking about sleep. There are a couple of things we can share to help you get enough sleep this year. Here are a few tips to reach the perfect sleeping conditions.

Set Yourself Up for Success

Your HVAC can play an essential role in setting the perfect sleeping conditions and getting your environment right. The temperature of your bedroom can significantly affect how easily you fall asleep. Cooler temperatures show to be more conducive to a good night’s rest. Keeping your bedtime temperature between 60 to 67 degrees Fahrenheit is a great place to start. According to the Sleep Foundation, the best bedroom temperature for sleep is approximately 65 degrees Fahrenheit and may vary a few degrees from person to person.

Temperatures above and below this range can result in shivering or sweating throughout the night, both of which happen without our conscious knowledge and tend to make for restless sleep. Good circulation in your room can help promote the quality of your sleep, whether by leaving a window open to keep the air circulating or your air conditioner running throughout the night.

Remove Distractions

Using mobile phones and computers in bed or before bedtime can negatively impact sleep. According to the Society of Behavioral Medicine, aside from temperature, light is the single most crucial trigger our body uses to regulate sleep and waking. When light is low, our bodies release a hormone called melatonin. These blue lights can slow down the melatonin that our bodies naturally produce. Avoid screens 30 minutes before bedtime to help your body start winding down.

Comfort is Key

Removing the electronics from your bedroom is an excellent start to making your room a haven bedtime. Making sure that your sheets and pillowcases are made of a breathable and comfortable material can help promote better sleep as well. Survey your bedroom and remove unwanted sources of light or sound that can disturb your sleep cycle. You can even try a humidifier or aromatherapy to create the perfect sleeping conditions.
