Your Ultimate Fall & Pre-Winter HVAC Maintenance Checklist

Sooner or later, the weather here in Texas should start to cool down, so now is the time to make sure your HVAC system is ready to make the switch from cooling to heating. Fall maintenance helps your system run more efficiently, helps prevent unexpected breakdowns, and saves you money on energy bills. We’ve compiled your ultimate HVAC maintenance checklist to keep your home comfortable, efficient, and safe all season long.

The Only Fall & Pre-Winter HVAC Maintenance Checklist You Need

1. Change or Clean Air Filters

Why: This should be on your checklist every month! Clean filters help improve airflow, reduce the strain on your HVAC, and help to maintain healthy indoor air quality.

What to do: Replace all one-inch filters every month or more frequently if you have pets or allergies. Check that the filter is the correct size and facing the correct direction when changing it out.

2. Clean Indoor & Outdoor Components

Why: If dust and debris build up on your HVAC it can block airflow and make your system work harder, driving up energy costs.

What to do: Vacuum your indoor vents and registers. Clear leaves, dirt, and debris from around your outdoor unit. It is important to keep at least two feet of clearance around your system.

3. Seal Air Leaks & Improve Insulation

Why: Seal up gaps around your windows, doors, and ducts. These gaps and cracks can let warm air escape and cold air enter. That makes your furnace work harder to keep your home at the perfect temperature.

What to do: Use weatherstripping or caulk to seal gaps and cracks. Check your attic insulation and more if needed to maintain efficiency.

4. Test Heating & Safety Systems

Why: Catching any problems early helps prevent costly repairs and ensures you won’t be left in the cold.

What to do: Turn on your heat briefly to confirm it is heating properly. Smells should dissipate, but here are some warning signs to look for. Check your pilot light or ignitor, inspect exhaust vents for blocks, and test your smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors.

5. Inspect Ducts

Why: Leaky ducts can lose your heated air before it even enters your room.

What to do: Have AeroDS professionally inspect and clean your ductwork.

6. Schedule Professional Maintenance

Why: A professional tune-up ensures every component from your wiring to refrigeration is working safely and efficiently.

What to do: Check out our current promotion to get a FREE year of maintenance. Or call AeroDS to schedule your biannual maintenance.
